20% Theatre Company presenting 50th and final production – Twin Cities

20% Theatre Company, which started in 2006 and has been committed to underrepresented voices and identities in theater, will close permanently at the end of 2021.

But before the company, which has been producing queer theater and supporting the work of female and transgender/non-binary theater artists, goes away, it will present its 50th and final production, “Brujería for Beginners.” The world premiere of the work by Keila Anali Saucedo will run Nov. 5-20, at Mixed Blood Theatre, 1501 S. Fourth St., Minneapolis.

According to 20%, “Brujería For Beginners” follows a family dealing with grief. “As they try to course of action their worlds, they analyze Catholicism, witchcraft and native spirituality to find their way to the holy. Guided by spirits, love for each other and ancestors (always), they find their way to claiming strength and possibility.” It will be performed in English and Spanish. “Brujeria” was first shown as a one-act play as part of 20%’s new works series and has been expanded.

The theater company board and staff decided to cease operations in 2019, stating that the financial resources were not obtainable to sustain the organization’s work, according to 20%’s website.

COVID restrictions will be in place for the show. For dates, times and tickets, go to tctwentypercent.org.
